• I’m heading back to worn on Wednesday but tonight I went to mum’s for dinner along with updating her phone, laptop and desktop software. Next week we’ve organised replacing my current bed because at the moment it is a bit worse for wear due to the middle of the bed lacking support (the newer beds from the same company now include a support for the ‘spine’ of the bed (imagine slats for each side of the bed with a single length of wood in the middle as support but nothing under it)) so that also involve hopefully being able to put the mattress outside on a fine day to get some fresh air.

That reminds me, at the back of my place I have a porch but what I’d like to get is a roof/cover for the area so then it provides a degree of shelter from the elements which will allow me to setup a clothes horse to dry clothes outside or have the door open on a day where it maybe raining or there is some wind but i want to get some fresh air inside. Hopefully next week the weather will be better and it is looking good according to the Metservice but I’m not going to put my hopes up given how quickly the weather can change.

On Wednesday there is going to be patch Tuesday and possibly be some other updates along with Chrome and Microsoft Edge then in two weeks time Chrome 142 will be released to the mainstream channel for everyone to access. I would say that around that time there will be the October update from Samsung along with the Play Services update for September or October (assuming they roll the two into a single update. I haven’t seen any news on what is happening with the One UI 8.5 but I’d say we’ll probably see it when the Samsung S26 is launched although I could bd wrong given that from what it appears the changes are more around the UI (focusing on refining rather than major changes) with the kernel version remaining the same.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I ran for parliament when I was at university and it was an interesting experience. What I did find is that most people who do get involved with policies do so for the right reasons. This is the reason I’m happy I got that exposure early on because there is a tendency to be negative about politics, the game of false equivalency is prevalent online with the sort of jaded ‘they’re both as bad as each other’ that ignores there are genuine good faith actors. There are those who are involved in politics that actually want to make things better – many of them with good intentions but unsure how best to achieve the end goal of making life better for everyone.

This is the reason I find a lot of the discourse in opposition to Trump ends up turning into a circular firing squad where liberals, leftists and centrists turn on each other because of impossible levels of purity testing, an expectation that something can be achieved instantly where it may require the initial policy then over the next few years making amendments as the short comings of the policy to be addressed. As a good friend of mine once said, in response to my moaning and groaning about the tax policy being pursued as not being bold enough for my liking, by asking me “but are we 80% closure to where we want to get to” and which point I had to admit that yes we were closer. One of those situations that you ‘take a W’ when you’re given the opportunity rather than getting angry because you didn’t get everything you wanted.

  • I had a restful day off from work although I had a sleep into around midday I then headed down to the supermarket to pick up some soup and fresh bread for dinner which is a nice way to feel warmed up after a day of rain and wind. I’ve been enjoying some YouTube videos although I have to admit that I prefer avoiding politics because it becomes very much repetitive – once you heard the bad news one I don’t think much is gained hearing it on repeat but said by a different commentator. It is something that I see all to often with the extreme of being completely ignorant at one extreme with the other extreme being of someone so engaged that one is sitting around huffing farts from ones favourite talking head even if what they’re saying is entirely devoid of detail other than it getting you angry and worked up.

The UniFi Access Point (U7 and E7 models) 8.2.17 has been released and is available straight away (at least it was for me). I’ve updated my UniFi Access Point U7 Pro Max to 8.2.17, it took a few minutes as it had to install then reboot once back up online I have a rock solid connection and I also noticed it was slightly more responsive but I’ll wait for a few days to see if I notice any other changes. My laptop is WiFi 7 compatible so it connections via 6GHz which insulates the connection from the growing popularity of 5GHz networks where I live (still not as bad as the amount of 2.4GHz that is causing a decent amount of interference).

This week is when the October Patch Tuesday will be made available along with any other associated updates however I maybe lucky enough have have the 25H2 made available but I have a feeling that Microsoft will want to test it before allowing it to be deployed to Microsoft Surface laptop devices. uBlock Origin Lite version 2025.1012.1712 has been released with some filter updates along with bug fixes for Safari – it has appeared in the Microsoft Edge store however it is waiting for approval on the Apple and Chrome stores.

It has been a while so I logged into the WECG meetings minutes to see how things are progressing in terms of adding more functionality to Declarative Net Request (DNR) and the project regarding the equivalent of WPT for web standards but geared up for MV3 compliance testing to ensure that implementation bugs are detected and fixed in a timely manner. Something tells me that Google and Firefox will fix bugs quickly and Apple will keep dragging its feet every step of the way. At the rate things are going I wonder whether Apple should just throw in the towel and adopt Chromium because it is clear their Webkit team don’t seem to have the motivation to fix bugs and add functionality in a timely manner to the point it resembles Microsoft Edge in the pre-Chromium days.

Do lazy days make you feel rested or unproductive?

I used to feel unproductive at first because I didn’t feel as though I was using my time efficiently when i had a lazy day at home – the idea that I have freetime and I should use it for something productive. What I have found is that by having a lazy day it allows me to be more productive after I’ve fully rested. Having those breaks makes all the difference when working as well – avoid being burnt out at work by ensuring that after work you find a health way of unwinding and then having a good night sleep so then the next day you’re ready to do it all over again.

  • End of another week and stat of a new one. I have to admit over the last couple of weeks I’ve been pretty lazy but what I’m hoping is that with the start of a new week that I’ll get back on track again. I’ve meal prepped my chia seed breakfast today for the next couple of days although I am looking at heading to the supermarket on Monday or maybe Tuesday to pick up some Greek Yoghurt to pair up with that along with some bottles of Pepsi Max if they’re available.

A new Window insider build was made available (link) and they’ve expanded dark mode to the run dialogue box. I was watching a video on YouTube and someone was unhappy it was taking too long to get dark mode available. I originally thought that maybe it had to do with them re-writing the dialogues in XAML however i have a feeling that it may have more to do with them integrating the common controls and dialogues into the Windows App SDK to take advantage of the framework so when you change the theme in a XAML/Windows App SDK application that the theme is automatically inherited by all UI components. Long story short, I think long term they’re wanting to move things over to Windows App SDK but in the mean time to get the results quicker they’re probably doing something not as radical. It’ll be interesting to see when these improvements make their way to the mainstream release of Windows 11.

As I’ve said in the past, the reason why things are more coherent in macOS resulting in a consistent UI experience when dark mode was made available was because in macOS 10.6 the Finder was re-written in Cocoa with the move to a pure 64bit operating system. It would be no different than if Microsoft re-wrote the whole Windows Shell using Windows App SDK which makes use of XAML with the end result being a consistent experience. The problem is that unlike Apple, Microsoft doesn’t have the luxury of being disruptive because their biggest customer’s aren’t Joe and Jane Smith but are large enterprise customers running tens of thousands of desktops whose organisations depend on knowing that disruptions are kept to a minimum so that employees can be productive.

It is always interesting to see how the platform is developing around the Windows Runtime environment – gradually building it up over releases and although as a user I am impatient I also understand that you want to make sure that when you design the framework to meet the needs of the target audience rather than designing, implementing and then realising that what you have created is great for what you do internally but fails to meet the needs of third party developers who will rely on it. I guess it is one of those things of moving the platform forward in a careful and considered way – ensuring their is progress with minimal disruption.

  • Another day of horrible weather – raining, windy and cold. Tonight I had some garlic bread, oven fries and chicken nibbles for dinner – something to warm me up on a cold evening. I’ve got my heater going but I’m hoping that the weather will get better because this is ideally the time when the weather improves, temperatures rise and my power bills come down as I should be using less power. On a good side, I’m happy that my place has double glazed windows along with insulation in the roof and floors so that what electricity I use for heating I’m retaining that heat rather than it disappearing out the walls and ceiling to the neighbourhood. When I was living in Christchurch it was the thing I hated most about the place – the lack of insulation resulting in spending a fortune on power only to find that the house was only marginally warmer than if we hadn’t turned on the heater in the first place.

One bit of news that popped up recently was the agreement between nVidia and Intel about creating custom x86-64/nVidia SoC with much speculation that Intel was going to reduce its investment in its own GPU. Personally I think such speculation is unfounded because nVidia and Intel go after different markets, Intel for integrated solutions for OEMs where as nVidia being for those at the high end or those that rely on the CUDA framework. Intel is about providing an integrated solution for thin and light laptops where as nVidia is all about ‘balls to the wall, power supply melting performance at any cost’. There is also the reality that even if nVidia were to finally ship their N1X SoC which uses an ARM CPU at its core there is still a lot of work out there that is designed to work on x86-64 and it is highly unlikely we’re going to see a massive migration from x86-64 any time soon.

Politics in the US is stumbling from one crisis to another but something tells me that as long as Americans embrace hyper individualism where their only concern is ‘what is in it for me’ it appears that the ‘but we didn’t vote for this crowd’ are only unhappy because they bad things they wanted happening to other people are happening to them as well. If you create a society that adopts the Gordon Gekko ethos of ‘greed is good’ then don’t be surprised that bad things happen. There is a greed in every country but in most countries there is a limit when the disparity between the rich and poor, between the haves and have nots become so extreme that the society no longer tolerates what is taking place and demands a correction. The US however it has becoming more and more extreme yet the self correcting mechanism within society hasn’t kicked in, the moment when even the wealthy in society can recognise the damage that is occurring and demand something to be done. As long as Americans keep embracing hyper individualism in the name of freedom I wonder whether there is a built in self correcting mechanism in US society that will eventually pull the US back from the brink.

On a lighter note, I ordered some groceries online via Woolworths for delivery including some crusty bread and pumpkin soup that will hopefully be delivered when I get up tomorrow morning. That will be a nice breakfast in the morning to wake up to something warm and nourishing before work.

  • Finished work and then went for a walk only to find that the weather was lousy. I was going to tough it out but by the time I got back after 5.8km it was getting close to raining then when I did get home the heavens opened. It makes me happy that I didn’t get caught in a downpour because the last time all my shoes and clothes were drenched it took age to dry. When I got home I heated up some minestrone soup to warm be back up again which was nice. Next week I’ve got some supermarket shopping where I’m going to pick up some more soup – we’re apparently in spring but it feels closer to the beginning of winter.

Intel has announced their Panther Lake processor and there are quite a few great videos on the Intel YouTube channel (link) where they go into detail regarding some of the changes. It’ll be interesting to see what the finalised details are given that next year it’ll be launched and I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up seeing Windows 11 26H2 being optimised for it.

Keeping in mind that Panther Lake is the mobile process (although you may find it mini-pcs as well) although Nova Lake will be the desktop variant which will also launch a refreshed version for the laptop being based on the 14A process. Regarding how it will perform when compared to ARM, as Jim Keller has pointed out, the ISA and backwards compatibility play a minor role regarding power efficiency and there is also the fact that once you reach a certain level for most people the fact that x86-64 might last 24 hours and the ARM lasts 26 hours doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. There is also the benefit of backwards compatibility and for some it is very important particularly if they use native applications or games on a regular basis. I love my ARM based laptop but I’m also realistic that backwards compatibility plays a big role in which the x86-64 has hung around for as long as it has.

I’ve been following politics in New Zealand and things keep going from bad to worse but I’m hopeful that Labour have realised that the current government failing isn’t an automatic win for the centre left – the votes have to be won by putting out a positive vision rather than just a chant of ‘the centre right sucks’. What I do hope that if they do win that they do a better job communicating their policy this time around, giving regular updates and explaining what they’re trying to do as well as having ministers who are willing to push back against BS when journalists and talking heads try the usual nonsense they engage in of declaring a centre left government a failure the moment that a utopia isn’t delivered within 3 months of taking office. The last time they were in office they allowed the right wing allies in the media shape the narrative so that by the time something could be done the damage had already accumulated to the point that it would be next to impossible to undo it before election day.

Oh, and from the archives of FAFO it appears that another group of vibes based Trump voters are realising that maybe a person on Tiktok with purple hair, septum ring and they/them pronouns with a handful of followers isn’t the downfall of the gaming industry. The group now finding out after fluffing around are the gamers who threw their weight behind Trump are finding out that no only has the cost of their hardware hobby gone up but thanks to the Trump administration FTC appointees they’re now finding that their games subscriptions are now going up in price. Something tells me that they won’t learn a single thing just as the American voter gave Republicans a majority in both houses back in 2010 after Obama rescued the global economy from certain collapse. I want to be hopeful but there are truly so many idiots out there.

  • I’m feeling a whole lot better having a couple of days to rest and recuperate. The weather has been pretty lousy for the last couple of days, lots of wind and rain but hopefully it is the last bit of a nasty weather before spring comes around. I finished cleaning up around the house and get things into order so then I am ready for tomorrow. I’ve played my Connections and Wordle with much success – the more do it the better I am at seeing patterns and learning to ignore what appears to he connections but aren’t what the puzzle makers had intended.

Chrome 141 is going well so far and Edge will probably receive an update either tomorrow or the next day but then again if there isn’t a serious update it may get rolled into patch Tuesday next week. There was an ‘Microsoft Corporation – System Hardware Update – 9/22/2025’ update installed a day or two ago, I’m unsure what it does but I assume it is related to maybe drivers because when I did reboot I didn’t see any sort of firmware update on reboot so maybe it was updating the recovery drive or something. The Windows Insider is getting some recent updates particularly around dark mode and user interface consistency (link) but given the lack of user visible changes in the canary build i wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t start seeing any major user visible changes until maybe next year but given the chaos occuring in the world of macOS, ‘liquid glass’ and Webkit developers still not having fixed the subframe issue (I keep track of) each day I feel more and more vindicated regarding my decision to switch platforms.

There have been an avalanche of updates coming out from Ubiquiti particularly when it comes to the early access channel – UniFi Network Application 9.5.21, UniFi Access Point (all U7 and E7 models) 8.2.14 along with updates for the Cloud Key which is in the release candidate channel. I’m hoping that maybe in the next few weeks the Gateway update will be released along side the other updates. I’m still deciding whether I stick with Skinny or maybe have a look at Quic as it has pretty robust setup and IPv6 support along with a few other features that maybe neat to try out in the future. I also have a 2 Degrees SIM card as well so that option is always open as well so I’ll see what happens – maybe a good special will be announced like a free television or something when signing up for a 12 or 24 month contract.

  • I decided to take a day off to recover and get back to my more energetic self – going to take it easy and relax. I woke up today, checked for updates and it appears that the October update for patch Tuesday will be next week however there was an update for Chrome which updated to version 141.0.7390.66 (updated from version 141.0.7390.55) and so far it has been rock solid. Microsoft release an update to their insider versions of Windows 11 including bringing greater consistency when in dark mode (link) – it’ll be interesting to see when they’ll make it available but given that it has graduated from the more experimental channel to the beta channel gives me hope that maybe we’ll see it appear in a build before Christmas.

For brunch I had an iced coffee and then for dinner I had Malaysian Laksa – keeping it a light meal and tonight I went for a small walk to myself out of the house and enjoy some fresh air. I’m looking forward to the weather finally getting better soon as we get closer to summer but I’m still feeling very much a melancholy vibe over New Zealand with the economy creeping along, horror stories of young people trying to get a job with employers talking about how they’re receiving tonnes of resumes for maybe 1-2 positions and that doesn’t even touch on the number of businesses who said in 2024 “survive till 2025” in the belief that 2025 was going to be the year of recovery.

Things are pretty rough out there so my heart goes out to all those New Zealanders at the moment who have lost their job, are worried about their employment stability, trying to make ends meet and the young people who are just starting off only to find that the little help they would receive from the government has been taken away. I really do hope that either the government is a one term government if this continues or hopefully the interest rate cut today of 50 basis points to 2.50% – a lot of speculation regarding people who are coming off fixed interest rates and having them reset which will enable them hopefully fix at a lower rate and have more money available to spend. According to RNZ if a couple have a mortgage of $300,000 then it’ll translate to an extra $285 per month but that is assuming that there aren’t people out there paying more than the minimum to take advantage of lower interest rates to make some gains regarding paying down the principle quicker. That being said, the average mortgage amount is around $600,000 so it may end up being closer to $500-$600 per week but like I’ve said, we may see a culture change in people using that opportunity to pay off their debt quicker which will kind of undermine what the government is hoping for in terms of being money being spent into the economy.

Australia had to deal with high inflation after the pandemic lock down ended but unlike what is happened in New Zealand the Australian government didn’t do a slash ‘n burn combined with giving tax breaks to the top end of town. It appears that we’re doomed to repeating the same mistakes of the past and unfortunately there is a not so insignificant portion of the population that don’t seem to ever learn from history. Labour for all it’s faults had a long term plan and god knows they’re not perfect but had we continued on that path we would have had a soft landing, interest rates would have come down along with inflation pressures then eventually the budget deficit would have been reduced as many of the support policies during the pandemic were gradually being tapered off. Unfortunately wen voters have short memory spans combined with impatience they end up behaving irrationally and voting against their own interests.

  • Been resting up but I’m feeling a bit run down and crappy – I tend to catch something right around when seasons change so I think what I’ll do is have a sleep and then see how I feel in the morning because sometimes a good night sleep can be the solution. I completed the Connections tonight and got each row on the first go with Wordle being completed with the second attempt so no complaints from me.

Once again the contingent of socially reactionaries are throwing a temper tantrum regarding the fact that an artist by the name of ‘Bad Bunny’ is going to perform at the NFL half time show. The usual knuckle draggers coming out of the woodwork going on about bringing up the issue of immigration even though ‘Bad Bunny’ is from Puerto Rico which is part of the United States and then complains about the fact he primarily speaks Spanish even though Spanish is the predominant language spoken in Puerto Rico and large parts of the United States that used to be part of the Spanish colonial empire. Now for me ‘Bad Bunny’ style of music isn’t my taste (the music I like probably has a limited appeal although it was nice to see a metal band at the Olympics that was held in Paris, France):

So at the moment I have to admit is providing me with plenty of entertainment, seeing the right wing in the United States having a meltdown. I really have to wonder whether there is a noisy segment of the population who are perpetually sitting on the edge of their seat waiting to find or hear about something that’ll offend them so then they can play the victim and turn themselves into the centre of attention. Sitting on the edge of their seat, white knuckled, their legs jiggling because of all the adrenaline pumping through their body as they wait for the opportunity to be offended about something – no matter how trivial they’re addicted to the thrill of being able to be offended.

I found some documentation over on ‘Tech Power Up’ (link) in the comment section regarding the next architecture to be released in 2026 by Intel (link). It appears, based on the documentation, that FRED will make its way to Panther Lake however APX has only been made available for ‘Diamond Rapids’ which is their Xeon range which makes sense that servers and high end workstations would get the most benefit. With all that being said, Nova Lake will be released which will be aimed at the desktop which is probably when APX will be introduced. I thin the introduction of FRED (version 9 is the latest at the time this post was made) will make things interesting which should make the experience a lot smoother – here is a (link) that outlines what it actually does.

Long story short, what things such as APX, FRED and AVX 10.2 do, thanks to the standardisation occurring in the x86 advisory group, is to move the platform forward by addressing long standing issues and then ensuring that not only is it adopted by software and hardware vendors but also ensuring that there aren’t compatibility issues in terms of how it is implemented by Intel and AMD. There is the support that is required which require kernel level changes so I wouldn’t be surprised that we may not see the full benefits of these changes until next year when Windows 11 26H2 is released where the build number jumps to the 27900/28000 series where I’d say at the beginning of the year they’ll stabilise the core then start focusing on user visible improvements such as dark mode being implemented fully, adding more functionality to the Settings app and so on. By the time 26H2 is reach to be released the core of Windows 11 26H2 would have been rock solid for a year and then the transition will take place with another year of support for 25H2 customer who wish to hold back before making the big change.

  • It is fun to sometimes to ‘ride the algorithm’ on YouTube to see where it takes you and what I found is a bunch of relationship videos appearing – a few funny shorts along with some long form discussions with a good portion either rage bait or people who clearly lack of the maturity to be in a relationship with another person. With all that being said I do find it as a great way to find interesting topics or as a starting point when I get a writer’s block or find that I have some ideas swirling in my brain but there isn’t a coherent way to bring it all together.

One of the topics that were bought up in the YouTube videos I saw were the dysfunctional nature of relationships – particularly of millenials and the gen z (keeping in mind that there wasn’t an idealised time in the past and somehow we ‘fell from grace’ (to use a religious turn of phrase)) where those in the relationship can’t see to find moderation between having hobbies, interests etc but also understanding they’re in a relationship that needs to be nurtured or seeing every decision that isn’t focused on them at the centre of the relationship as an example of a failing relationship.

I was thinking about my grandparents as one example, my granddad was involved with the local Masonic Lodge and also helped out with the local RSA, grandma was involved with the local ‘Spinners and Weavers’ club along with helping out with the women’s division of the Masonic Lodge. They had a long lasting marriage because they both had things outside of their marriage to kept them sane, they maintained their friendships with people they knew since primary school.

I really have to wonder whether this change has come about as a result of the ‘me, me me, it’s all about me’ generation where personal fulfilment is the only thing that matters and as a result a generation of narcissists with the main character syndrome have convinced themselves that anything less than being the centre of everything is depriving them of something they are owed as a matter of birthright. I guess we can have a look at the rise of neoliberalism and hyper individualism, the idea of relationships playing second fiddle to individual wishes, whims and desires which is great if you’re wanting to tap into individual insecurities by promising a commodified lifestyle that be bought (and in the process creating the treadmill of unhappiness -> desire product because it promises to fix the unhappiness -> acquisition -> honeymoon period -> unhappiness).

One could make the argument that capitalism benefits from having a large number of unhappy and insecure people believing that fulfilment isn’t found through relationships, community, religion etc. but through the acquisition of goods and/or services while ignoring the fact that the demand is manufactured through the promise that said product will fill that void in their life when in reality shortly after getting it they feel just as empty as before. The capitalist class ends up benefiting but society as a whole is falling apart and unfortunately, we see the consequences manifest itself as seen in recent events. The problem is that as long as people convince themselves that capitalism equals freedom then it’ll serve a distraction from the fact that they’re not really free.

  • A nice relaxing day at home where I was catching up on some news and once again it appears that the National lead coalition government is demonstrating how detached they are from what is happening out in the real world at the moment (link). I can understand the logic of means testing but why not make it consistent by bringing it in line with the student allowance or better still, wouldn’t it make a whole lot more sense having a universal student allowance but means test the unemployment benefit to send a signal that the government would sooner see you learning a skill than being on the dole?

Personally, I think the whole idea of means testing the unemployment benefit and the student allowance are both ridiculous and I also think it is ridiculous to expect someone who is 18 or 19 years old to get a job in an economy that is contracting, record number of businesses shutting up shop and the employers who are employing are getting 600+ applications for a single position. Once again we have a narrative put out there of an economy that doesn’t exist – it has the same energy as the ‘young people need to stop eating smashed avocado on toast then they’ll be able to buy a house’ meme with the same entitled class of people are now insisting ‘there are jobs out there, they just need to get off TikTok and start applying for jobs’ as if there was an avalanche of employers out there who are demanding workers but cannot get anyone to apply for a job.

You can see the prime minister was clearly asked a follow up question regarding the jobs that are being created as being seasonal jobs and he failed to address the fact that those jobs only exist during that particular season so what happens when their contract ends? I’m sorry but just ‘charging through’ the questions instead of addressing the concerns the journalists have raised in the press conference just shows how out of touch the prime minister is from the real world. It reminds me of the idiotic thing someone said almost two decades ago: “I’ve been on food stamps and welfare, did anyone help me out? No.”. That is what wealth does to some people – makes them completely disconnected from what is happening in the real world.

I can understand why people voted for Luxon because many saw him as a continuation of John Key, they were struggling to make ends meet and saw him as maybe a return to a time where the cost of living wasn’t so bad and the economy was better. I would use my sister and her partner as a barometer to represent normies out there and that was the rationale that they used. Who did I vote for? I split my vote between the Green Party and the Labour Party, Chris Hipkins received my constituent vote and Green’s for the party vote. I’m a member of the Labour Party and recently made a $20 donation. What I am hoping is that maybe next I can get more involved politically because I’d like to have some input into the direction of the party when it comes to policy. I wouldn’t call myself a radical although I do sit on the left with most views being pretty traditional Labour policy that existed prior to the neoliberalism hellscape that New Zealand was subjected to in the 1980s (and was continued on through by subsequent governments).

I was completing a Connections and Wordle puzzle tonight – it is funny how with Connections how one can think there is a pattern but there isn’t or end up over analysing the words to the point that you end up missing the obvious connections. Anyway, I like having something that gets my brain working – reminds me of the crosswords in the newspaper back in the day when mum and dad had a newspaper subscription to ‘The Dominion’ (the paper in the morning, there was ‘The Evening Post’ which used to be the evening paper).
